Were you recently injured to where you had a tooth come part way out of the socket? If so, this is considered a partially dislodged tooth, or an extruded tooth.
The first thing you must do is take a clean piece of gauze or a clean washcloth or similar cloth and put it on anything that is bleeding. Be careful not to touch the tooth that is partially dislodged, just the areas around it.
From there, you need to call us and come in to get seen as soon as you possibly can. The only way to save a tooth that has partially dislodged is to have us correct the problem before the tooth dies.
Treating a Partially Dislodged Tooth
When you have a tooth that comes part of the way out of the socket, it does not mean that the tooth is going to die. In fact, it can be saved most of the time if we see you early enough following the injury. However, you need to make sure that you do not do anything that could introduce infection to the area.
If the root of the tooth is intact and the socket did not suffer any type of fracture, we will slowly guide the extruded tooth back into place, and probably take an x-ray to make sure everything looks good on the inside.
Then, we will use a wire and a bit of bonding to hold that tooth in place while it heals. We can also attach brackets, like braces, to each tooth and have a wire holding the two pieces in place.
After some healing, we will take more x-rays to make sure that the tooth is sitting properly and healing like it should. For more information, call our office today.
